Have you ever watched a cheetah running at full speed, its velvety hide swinging back and forth as it speeds towards its prey? Or the quality of water as a single drop causes ripples through entire body of water? These are both supple experiences, which, by definition lacks tightness, holding, contracting, and stiffening.
All healthy muscles in the body should have a quality of suppleness. The odd thing is, we rarely seek “tightness” in the body, except in the pelvic floor where the cultural narrative has told us that the tighter we are, the better. We are told tighter is better for our sex life. Better for our abs. Better for our life after having a baby.
But is tighter really better?
And what about for birth? Does a tight pelvic floor help or hinder birth? Do cesarean births really “save” the pelvic floor?
Should you be doing Kegels, stretches, PT, vaginal weights, vaginal steaming, or just be doing nothing?
There is a plethora of misinformation about pelvic floor health out there. And while the intention is almost always good, and while some of these things may work for some people, the pelvic floor is something that needs to be assessed on an individual basis.
